What I’m eating:
Since giving up my morning eggs, I’ve started drinking a daily smoothie. I have always been staunchly anti-smoothie because they all taste like bananas to me and I hate bananas, but desperate times (like finding out you’re allergic to eggs) call for desperate measures.
My Go-To, Keep You Fulli-sh Until Lunch Smoothie Recipe
1 cup frozen berry mix
1 large organic avocado
1 1/2 handfuls of spinach
2 tb flax seeds
2 tsp maca
A small pour of maple syrup (like, a tablespoon. Also I can’t have honey, so if putting maple syrup on anything other than pancakes seems Elf like to you, use honey)
Almond Milk… your best guestimate. I usually fill the blender up to about 3/4 of the mixture.
Blend, stir, blend some more. Makes 2 mason jar’s worth of smoothies, so you have breakfast for the next two days! Also, I just want you to know that this smoothie on a good day is green-brown and on a bad day is brown-brown.
Speaking of healthy food, I made this detox soup from Pinch of Yum on Monday and holy SMOKES was it delicious. It’s a bit more labor intensive than the average crock pot meal but totally worth it.
What I’m reminiscing about:
We planned and saved for our European adventure for so long and now it seems so long ago! So many fun memories from this trip.
Olympic Stadium in Barcelona
High Tea at the Orangery in London
Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh… I just read a poorly constructed but very exciting article that Outlander is CURRENTLY FILMING on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh just a stone’s throw away from where this picture was taken… not a magical, time traveling stone mind you, but a stone nonetheless.
What I’m loving:
I love the newness of January, the resolutions, the reflections, the fresh start. This month, I’ve been focusing on intentionality in all areas of life and just leaning in to the fact that I need to write everything down or it will not happen.
For example, I just started doing prayer cards! I lack natural structure and my thoughts are always going in a million different directions, so writing down my prayers for people on notecards and then praying through them in the morning is just about the only way I can have a focused prayer and it’s wonderful.
Also, this basic eyeshadow tutorial from the Small Things Blog. I don’t know if this is sad, but it kind of rocked my world. I learned how to apply makeup in high school theatre, which is essentially like saying I learned in clown school.
What I’m working on:
Having courage and being kind (Cinderella’s mama said to do it, and so did Paul).
What I’m watching/reading:
Glory Over Everything, Kathleen Grissom
The sequel to The Kitchen House, which I devoured over Christmas break. I just started, but it’s great so far!
Breaking Busy, Alli Worthington
I finished reading this book a few weeks ago and have been going back and working through the exercises- it’s been a perfect start of the year, reorient yourself read. Also, the first anecdote she shares about losing her phone on the way to airport only to discover it later stuffed into her bra had me laughing so hard that I had to read it out loud Will.
As for what I’m watching, it would seem I am a glutton for punishment, because I just can’t stay away from The Bachelor and I have feelings that must be shared:
This ain’t your first rodeo, buddy. TIGHTEN.UP. Stop acting like a FOOL. You are 36, not 16. You do not have to head into the bouncy house with whoever asks. Look up the definition for confidence and maybe run it by a therapist and then you, me and Chris Harrison can sit down and have a chat about what it means to respect and appreciate women.
Oddly enough, the one thing that has endeared me to Nick (NY-UCK as Kaitlyn called him) is his proximity to Vanessa while she repeatedly vomited into a white paper bag on their zero gravity date.
This is the stuff relationships are built on right here:
The look of concern! The grabbing of the yellow fuzzy sock! The clutching of the vomit bag! The American flag!! I don’t think you can ask for a more genuine picture of blossoming love. Vanessa was such a class act throughout this whole episode, which briefly made me think that maybe she should not end up with this tousled man child, but then I remembered that reality television love knows no boundaries such as maturity level or general behavioral norms and self corrected. Vanessa for the win!
What I’m listening to:
A friend turned me on to the Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey right before Christmas break and I have probably listened to somewhere in the ballpark of 75 of them since then. My favorites so far have been Jen Bricker, Shay Shull, Shauna Niequist, Lisa Bevere, and Emily Lex.
I also discovered the song ‘God, Your Mama, and Me’ by Florida, Georgia Line… I know it sounds like the start of a bad joke, but it features The Backstreet Boys and it’s perfect.
What I’m wearing:
Mostly spring clothing because we don’t have seasons in Texas.
I bought this gingham (or buffalo check? I can never remember the difference) top at Anthropologie on sale over the weekend, with the last last of my Christmas gift card and I love it. It’s bright and lightweight and got cute little buttons up the back.
I have also been wearing this undershirt cami wonder non stop. It’s fantastic. I have been wearing a stretched out white cami from Forever 21 under my shirts for years, and this has been a total game changer.
With all of the January sales going on, I’m getting sick of being told that I ‘NEED’ or ‘MUST HAVE’ certain items in my closet. In truth, what I need is to be spending responsibly. What I ‘must have‘ is a restrained and intentional outlook on my wardrobe.
All that to say. I sat down a few weeks ago and modified this capsule wardrobe planner from Unfancy into a spreadsheet of my monthly budget + the items I would like to add to my closet this year. A new swimsuit is at the top of my list, as my go to is so stretched out I’m worried I’m going to be looking like the coppertone girl.
What I’m doing this weekend:
My cousin is getting married! The attire is ‘cocktail,’ so I’m excited to get all dolled up with my family.
What I’m looking forward to next month:
I have a love of celebrating Valentine’s Day with ladies that dates back to even before Leslie Knope introduced the world to Galentine’s. My friends and I celebrated a little something called ‘Creepy Valentine’s Day’ for a few years in our 20’s.. this usually consisted of us getting together, watching a scary movie, and writing creepy fake love notes from the perspective of movie and literary characters. Sadly, Creepy Valentine’s has fallen by the wayside (RIP), but my sisters and I still do it up right for Galentine’s!
Bonus question this month: Who is your favorite Bachelor?
You know, I really don’t know. I think I actually tend to like the Bachelorette more because a lot more Bachlorettes spring to mind as my favorite. I did like Sean Lowe (even though I didn’t watch his season, sadly! I liked him when he was on Emily’s season as a contestant), as well as Bachelor Brad (on his victory lap) because he just seemed kind of sweet and clueless.
Juan Pablo’s season was hands down the most fun to make fun of though. I still say ‘ees OK, and ‘now that I am the bach-ee-lore’ in regular conversation. It always applies. Also, I will never forget when he convinced Andi to take her clothes off for a photo shoot with him by telling her “But Andi, eets for da dogs.”
Also, this was his final rose speech:
Though if this is better or worse than telling two people you love them when you’re days away from proposing to one (and only one) of them, I’m not sure.
